Scholarships - Money is not enough...
The McConnell Foundation is in the second year of its revamped scholarship programs for students in the North State. Scholarships are available to students in Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity Counties; they’re also available to students from the Big Valley High School District in Lassen County.
The scholarship program was completely revised when we realized that only about a third of eligible students renewed for their second year of funding. The Foundation analyzed why more students weren’t fully engaged in the program and came to the conclusion that it would take a comprehensive program – not just money – to help students succeed in college.
Instead of simply paying out funds, we have created a comprehensive program, adding a Scholarship Program Officer to our staff, who is dedicated to providing the non-financial support in addition to the monetary awards that students need in order to succeed at college. Our goal is to form supportive relationships that begin with the application process and continue well after graduation. Both programs are true community efforts, with students selected by teams of specially trained, dedicated and caring volunteers from each county we serve.
