Equity-Informed Bikeshare in Downtown Redding

 In Community Vitality

It has been said that a sudden increase of bikes in a community can be a harbinger of gentrification. The Bicycles are coming!

This is why it’s critical to center equity from the very start of designing a system, prior to bringing a bikeshare vendor on board. In May 2020, Shasta Living Streets and The McConnell Foundation teamed up with Alta Planning+Design to undertake a planning process for how to design a bikeshare system that serves community needs. Here is an excerpt of the equity analysis from that study:

In October 2020, the team applied for funding for bikeshare through California’s Clean Mobility Options Program and earlier this year, we learned that because of the approach we designed, we were awarded funding to specifically serve the needs of affordable housing residents in Downtown Redding. This–paired with funding from California’s Affordable Housing Sustainable Communities program–contributes to the feasibility of this vision becoming a reality.

Now in October 2021, we’re announcing the Request for Interest for a vendor to join the team and partner on this exciting project. Take a look at the description and if you know of a vendor who would be a fit, please reach out!
